Petrified Wood from Wyoming

The most popular petrified wood found in Wyoming is from the Farson area in Sweetwater County. The Eocene age Green River Formation where this wood is found spans a large area in Wyoming. This formation is famous for its wonderful fish and leaf fossils as well as some of the best preserved petrified tree branches and limbs found. There are many areas where the petrified wood is found but the most famous is the Blue Forest area near Farson, Wyoming. The climate in this area during the Eocene age over 50 million years ago was very mild. Due to the mild climate most of the wood from this area shows few if any growth rings and most are dicots (hardwoods). The most common wood in this formation is pepper but there is also holly, laurel, oak and sycamore along with others. Palm is also found in this formation. There are several kinds represented with the most common being a cluster palm with an average diameter around one inch. Some of the larger palms have a diameter up to 14 inches. This area has been collected for many years and most of the material for sale today is from collections that were started years ago. The days of walking and picking up the petrified wood from the surface are long gone and you must dig to find it these days.
